Moon Bow asked:

My co-worker is selling her old one for $40.00. It runs and it has it's own cover. But I'm not sure how well it runs. It not digital. Would you risk buying this machine? I was looking for one to practice on before I buy a new one. What do I need to look out for when I go to expect it tomorrow?

  1. Wow a Bernina at $40.00, grab it! I would ask her why she’s selling, maybe she’s planning to trade up. Ask her if she has had it tuned, timed, & serviced lately. If she hasn’t, then you’ll have to do it. It’s a good practice to have it serviced at least once a year. Ask her where she has had it serviced.

I have a Bernina that’s over 30 years old. It is my major sewing machine I use to handle all types of fabrics. It is all metal, Swiss Made, and just an absolute dream. I have never considered upgrading to anything else. The only other machines I have are a serger, and an old, heavy duty, 56 year old Singer. Older all metal machines are easy to fix, and can last another 50 years with proper maintanece.

Don’t let the age fool, older machines were made to last.

Another good thing about Bernina is that you can still have help and instructions if you take it to a shop that service’s Berninas. There is a yahoo group dedicated to discussions of the use of old Berninas. The group is called:http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BerninaThirtySomethings/
That must say something if there are women who delight in discussing various aspects of their old Berninas.

  2. When I took a home economics course in the seventh grade (1973), the Bernina was touted as the best sewing machine ever.

I did not continue sewing, so I am not sure if Bernina is still as great as it used to be. This I know, when I hear of a Bernina, I think of expensive and great sewing machine. If I could get a hold of one that was still running, for 40 bucks, I’d buy it and teach myself to sew again.

  3. I have just purchased a Bernina 860 about 30 yrs old it runs like a dream .make sure you can drop the feed dogs have zig zag stitch and will do button holes .I think these are the basic things you need and you will be able to do anything even quilt I have a Bernina 440 and it doesn’t sew as well as the old one

  4. GET THE BERNINA FOR $40.00 !!!
I am a Bernina technician. It doesn’t matter what you should look for. You should get this machine and go spend 40 - 50 dollars and get it tuned up. Older Berninas are great machines and still very valuable. Always will be.
