How do I use the bobbin winder of an old singer sewing machine?

There are basically 2 types of Singer machines that use bobbins:
One is the “long-shuttle”, the other the “round bobbin”. The difference in the two types is very apparent when looking at them. The long-shuttle type was used in very early machines and was replaced by the round bobbin type. If you have one of the long-shuttle machines, the bobbin winder is found on the right-hand side and is quite large in relation to the rest of the machine. The bobbin lays sideways in the spring-loaded holder which is then pivoted upwards so that the drive wheel is against either the hand wheel or the belt, depending on the model. The round bobbin winder uses the same principle to drive it, but the bobbin is placed on a spindle with the drive wheel on the opposite side. Look at your machine carefully to determine which type you have, thread your thread through the guides leading to the bobbin winder and run the machine to wind the bobbin. If you have the manual, read it while sitting in front of the machine and follow the instructions carefully and you should have no trouble.
