Keep it simple. They don’t need all the details of the bobbin, threading and such. Provide visuals.
“A sewing machine moves a needle though cloth or paper.
Without thread, it punches holes (have sample of paper with needle punched holes - make a design they easily recognize, such as a star).
With thread, it hold two pieces of cloth or paper together (have sample).”
