I believe the Prelude has 3 needle positions. If that's not the problem, then I would call a small store that sells and repairs sewing machines and ask them about it... is it easy to fix, is it a sign of a badly made machine. If they say it's common and would take a minute to fix, consider taking it in. They might do it for nothing if you buy a package of bobbins or some thread or other things you're going to need anyway. There is nothing wrong with returning it, except that it would be inconvenient for you. If you have to ship it for the return, make sure the company pays your shipping.
