Not a stupid question. You may have a self winding bobbin machine. The newer ones are like that ;).

If you do have an older machine, you need to insert the threaded bobbin for the lower thread. Essentially a sewing machine takes thread from both above and below the two fabric layers and causes them to intertwine to form the stitch.
Hope that helps.

Help! I keep watching the video but I can't get the part after putting the bobbin in the case. On your diagram you point out the two notches to put the thread through but I can't figure out what or where the second notch is. It's been so many years since I sewed, it has completely left my mind!

Try just sliding the thread along that left edge. You may also have a different model with a different bobbin case.

Keep trying, and do some searches for the user manual for your model on the internet. Always good to have a copy of your user manual.

Check out my video list on my channel -- I have a video on threading the bobbin. If your bobbin is different, check out my favorites. I favorited some other Youtube users' videos about sewing machine bobbins.

You need to raise and lower the needle by hand. It will catch the bobbin thread and bring it through the feeder plate to the top.

Um.. my series number is on the front of my machine, but I recall on my old, ancient Singer it wasn't obvious.

can you video the process close up? Sorry, but your video is extremely unclear. Which direction does the thread go after you've entered the second notch, for example?

Okay, well the video was only partially helpful. It really could have used a close up of the bobbin which would be hard to get....

Here are some things that are missing.

1 - The bobbin should go in the machine so that the thread is wound counter-clockwise.

Next comment for more.

2 - As the thread comes off the bobbin for winding, on my machine it doesn't go into the first notch, but does go in the 2nd notch. Then, I have to pull the thread forward and then over to the left. (as if I'm trying to make it now go clockwise.) I continue holding the thread towards the left and gently pull it towards the back left, where there's a "guide" in place. Then, I manually wind the wheel so that the needle goes down and picks up the bobbin thread. Don't know if that will help.

I do hope that helps someone if this tutorial doesn't.

My bobbin instructions most clearly specify the thread on the bobbin as clockwise (from where it's doming off the bobbin).

Thanks for your addition!

Hi!

Where or how do you put the loose bobbin thread so that is comes out of the slide plate? The looses threaded bobbin in the video goes from it being loose and open to a closed slide plate.

Thanks!
