is it normal for a singer 306W sewing machine to run very slow?

oil on the motor windings will burn it up, but I am betting there is some oil on the belt and it is slipping. dry it off good and try again . Some other part may be binding as well, it sounds like you had a lot of parts off.

Did you dig out the old grease and replace it?

The 306W is a very strong, durable machine. A new motor will cost you between 25 and 30 dollars and is a readily available part you will find at most sewing machine stores. It is not uncommon for a machine of this vintage to have a slow motor due to oil and “gunk” on the windings. The oil can also create a fire hazard, so I recommend replacing the motor before you use the machine again.

I am a sewing machine tech also and I bet there is nothing wrong with your motor. I’ll bet the problem is that you have your belt too tight. Loosen the belt. The belt should be loose enough to just turn the machine. That is when it will be fastest. You can loosen the motor mount screw and run the machine while adjusting the belt. Find the best spot for you.

Also did you know your machine does not take standard 15×1 needles. It takes 206×13 needles which can be found on eBay. Normal needles have too much space between the eye and the tip and will cause you problems.
