What model of sewing machine would you recommend for a complete novice?
sarah j asked:
The kind of projects I'd like to attempt are simple clothes for my kids and tote bags and to be able to repair/ hem clothing. I've never used a sewing machine in my life. My only experience with needle and thread is cross-stitch and replacing buttons. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I just bought a brother 2600 i machine, even though it looks confusing, once you do it it is so easy. It even has a needle threader. I sew everything from little kids books, to quilts on it. I love it, and it isn’t really expensive.

Check with any business that does sewing machine repairs and services - many times they will have great deals on trade-in machines or basic models that people have left for up grades. I really like Singer because it’s well known and most repair shops will service them. I have my mom’s and it’s 40 yrs. old - goes to the Bernina shop yearly for servicing and fine tuning.

I don’t like to sew but I know that Wal-mart has several different style and brands right now. You may want to look there.

As a sewing machine repair guy I would suggest to you that you stay away from the Wal-Marts and K-Marts etc if you don’t want to spend much money. Look for a basic used machine that just does straight, zig-zag, buttonholes. The plastic machine you can buy cheap now days are not near as good as the 20 - 40 year old machines that are all metal and will work forever properly maintained. Check with a dealership that has a repair shop and speak with the repair guy. Or watch e-Bay for one that has been well maintained. You can have a basic machine that will last you forever that way. Then get to know the local repair guy and have it serviced once a year. Nice used machines to trust are Bernina, Phaff, Singer, Viking- Husquevarna, Janome, Brother.
Good luck to you.
